Leadership Development

The observation phase of my doctoral research involved several midwifery leadership development programmes in the Midlands. In the subsequent narrative interviews, programme participants identified both opportunities and challenges associated with their experiences. These views are highlighted in the poster below, and of particular significance are two issues described by participants: first, the timing of development – most were coming toward the end of their career, and they talked about times when development would have been more appropriate; and second, the serious challenge of bringing learning back into the workplace, due to a sense of disconnection between the programme and their everyday working life.

If we are to effectively develop the next generation of midwifery leaders, these two concerns need to be addressed. Why Not supports the development of midwives and maternity staff at any stage of their career, and our emphasis is always on bringing classroom learning and real life practice together.
